Member introduction: Bitwise

One of our latest members, Bitwise develops software with the most reliable code imaginable. CEO Tomi Mikkonen believes Bitwise has the vision and capability to advance the utilisation of rapidly evolving technology in the defence industry.

“We have over 22 years of experience in software development, with a focus on industrial applications. Bitwise is known for our expertise in areas such as embedded systems, machine learning, automation, autonomy, analytics and location, and condition monitoring. I believe our expertise aligns well with the skill requirements of DDE and the defence industry.”

Why are you a DDE member?

“Bitwise software is highly reliable and features long lifecycles. Most of our software is used in high-responsibility environments. Our systems perform precisely as required. In defence, operations cannot be disrupted because of field software updates. A major motivation to participate in DDE is our patriotic commitment and the desire to contribute. No one succeeds alone in today’s world – I believe we have both something to offer and something to gain from DDE.”

Which themes interest you the most?

“We are interested in software expertise, AI solutions, and data analytics. I believe that the more members give to each other, the more we all gain. The defence sector has traditionally relied on hardware on the frontlines. We aim to apply advanced technology to the battlefield, for example, in autonomous flying devices. Technology can detect things that humans cannot, such as small anomalies in data. We are moving toward a more agile world.”

How do you see DDE’s role in Finnish society?

“We have learned valuable lessons from Ukraine, and our understanding of current needs is sharpening. The product development cycle for advanced solutions is extremely fast. Rapid advancements, from both attackers and defenders, emerge every few weeks, driving the need for agility. If our eastern neighbour were to challenge us, we must be prepared to respond more effectively than Ukraine is today. The integration of high-tech solutions on the battlefield is vital for all NATO countries.”

What are your company’s future goals?

“We have identified that information technology, artificial intelligence, and the use of data in the defence sector will be our sharpest competitive edge in the future. This is how we can extract additional performance from existing defence capabilities. We intend to establish a significant foothold in this area and explore opportunities in international markets as well.”
